Mavericks fall short in Houston

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

So much to talk about and so little time to write about it! Thank you loyal followers and fans for your patience and support while I navigate through the insurance chaos during the day and try to stay up late at night to share a few words and thoughts with you.

Let's talk about the Dallas Mavericks for a minute. What the heck happened to them tonight in Houston against the team with the second worst record in the league? I'll tell you what happened, the good ol' trap game. Never fails, vintage Carlisle not having his team prepared for what should have been an easy win on the road against the Rockets. Instead its a 102-93 loss. Mavs are 7th in the West and Memphis is rising quickly right behind them. The Grizzlies are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

I guess when you shoot 37% from the field and 10-39 from long range, you can't even beat Houston. They got out-rebounded, out-hustled, out-played for most of the game and then some terrible shot selection in the second half really did them in. Luka had a horrible shooting night, he went 9-26 from the field and committed 5 fouls.

John Wall went off in his return from injury, dropping 31 points and Christian Wood added 22 points and 10 boards. Wood took over in the 3Q scoring 12 of his 22. No excuses for this one, both Luka and KP played but it was a bad shooting night overall. It does not get any easier for Dallas, they have to travel back home to face Giannis and the Bucks Thursday night.

Side note, I'm not a fan of Dwight Powell, the guy is a liability while he's out there. He can't score if its not a lob, he can't stay healthy and he can't rebound! He's played in only 10 games this season, averaging just under 15 min, 4.5 PPG on less than 50% shooting and ONLY 3.3 rebounds per game, there are much shorter guards that can average more rebounds with comparable playing time. He's making a shade over 11 million a year through 2023, can we move this guy already, he's not the answer at center or power forward.

Let's give credit where credit is due. Dallas had won 5 in a row before Wednesday's loss in Houston including wins over the Celtics and league leading Utah Jazz. In those games, much better offensive performances from Luka, Jalen Brunson and DFS. The Mavs have to find a rotation that works and get more consistency from their bench in order to stay out of the play-in tournament at the end of the season. We'll find out a lot about this team and how well they respond to this dud in Houston on Thursday night against Milwaukee.
