DBU Sweeps Mizzou

By: Alex Bustillo @txsportsblog

Dallas Baptist Patriots faced the Missouri Tigers in day two action of the Frisco Classic at Dr. Pepper Ballpark on March 5th. The temperature dropped a bit for first pitch at 6pm but still a beautiful night for baseball with fans in attendance. DBU was coming off the dramatic 3-2 victory the night before against the Tigers after an 8th inning rally.

Two top prospects were on the mound and they did not disappoint. D1 Baseball No. 73 prospect Dominic Hamel got the nod for DBU and No. 124 Spencer Miles was on the hill for the Missouri Tigers. Both young studs tossed a scoreless first inning and Hamel was on his way to a career night.

Dan Heefner made a few lineup changes for the Patriots. Last night's DH Andres Sosa got the start at 1B. Christian Boulware was behind the plate and Jeffrey David got the start in CF.

DBU continued to get the lead off man most of the evening and the Patriots lineup was able to capitalize off Tigers mistakes. Hamel worked his way out of a little trouble in the B2 after back to back walks but was able to strike out Luke Mann to end the threat. Hamel had 5 strikeouts after 2 innings.

Dallas Baptist got the scoring started on an Austin Bell groundout which drove in David after he led off the inning with a walk. The walks would haunt the Tigers the rest of the night. The Patriots would plate 3 in the frame after pulling off a double steal and scoring on a passed ball and a throwing error by catcher Mike Coletta. DBU would not look back. That was plenty of run support for Dominic Hamel.

Hamel would cruise the rest of the night and the Patriots bullpen would take care of the rest. Austin Bell added some insurance in the 5th with a two run bomb to RF off Miles to make it 5-0 DBU and that would be the end of Spencer Mile's night. He pitched 4.1 allowed 4 hits, didn't get help from his defense, also walked 4 while striking out 3.

Trae Robertson pitched well in relief of Miles, but Hamel was too dominant and Missouri could not muster up any offense. Dominic Hamel pitched 6 masterful innings striking out a career high 13 and a Frisco College Baseball Classic record, did not give up a run, scattered 2 hits and walked 3 to improve to 3-0 on the season and lower his ERA to 1.19.

DBU added three more runs in the 9th and Peyton Sherlin and Luke Trahan would preserve the 8-0 shutout win for the Patriots as they complete the sweep of the Tigers in the tournament.

Dallas Baptist improves to 7-2 and will face off against a red hot Arizona Wildcats team who took care of business both days against the Oklahoma Sooners. If you like offense, Arizona has scored 32 runs in two games. The two teams face off March 6th at 1pm.
