Cuban rookie providing spark

Who is this young and electric outfielder who’s lighting up the boxscore day in and day out for the last week or so? Let me introduce you to the 28-year-old must-watch rookie who shines in the batter’s box and mesmerizes with his glove and arm in the outfield.

From Cuban National team and bronze medalist at the 2015 Pan American Games to Texas Rangers starting OF and tied for the team lead in HRs with 5 (league leader amongst rookies) and only two behind MLB leader J.D. Martinez. The former Cuban national team star has found a home in Texas only 10 games in. This guy is built like a linebacker and runs like a track star.

It wasn’t always so glorious for Adolis Garcia. He defected from Cuba in 2016, joining a long list of active MLB players who have endured many hardships in often dangerous journeys involving traffickers and criminals to simply have an opportunity to live out a dream. Garcia had a stint in Tokyo, Japan with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball before catching on with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2017. He split time between the AA and AAA affiliates for the Cardinals in 2017 before finally getting an opportunity on August 8, 2018, only getting 17 at-bats in 21 games hitting .118.

The Cardinals designated Garcia for assignment on December 18, 2019, and traded him three days later to the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. Garcia was invited to Spring Training and made his debut for the Rangers just 11 days ago. In just 10 games for the club, Adolis Garcia is batting .268 with 5 HRs and 12 RBI’s. He’s provided that oomph in the Rangers lineup that you get and so desperately need from drinking Cuban coffee in the morning and is quickly becoming a fan favorite with his exuberance and infectious energy, not to mention his exhilarating bat flips.

Garcia hopes to sustain his recent success and create additional opportunities for him and continue to inject that Cuban flair and remarkable talent that the MLB and fans have become accustomed to.

Don’t miss your next opportunity to watch Garcia as the Rangers continue a three-game weekend series with the Chicago White Sox with a 6:10 pm CST start on Saturday night April 24th and a 1:10 pm CST start on Sunday afternoon.
