FC Dallas shocked by Earthquakes at home

Frisco, Texas — Toyota Stadium was packed with excitement on Saturday night in anticipation of the re-opening of the South End that had been under construction since 2015. To add to that excitement, the last place San Jose Earthquakes were in town and FC Dallas were poised to pad their lead atop the Western Conference. The Earthquakes had other ideas. San Jose struck first in the 19th minute after Valeri “Vako” Qazaishvili capitalized on keeper Jesse Gonzalez’s blunder as he was caught in no man’s land after leaving his line. It took Dallas less than 5 minutes to answer the early goal with one of their own. Roland Lamah found the back of the net in the 23rd min after brilliant play from Cannon and a pass from Barrios and Lamah snuck it past Andrew Tarbell. It was all square at the half with San Jose having the edge in shots and possession. The second half started much like the first with the Earthquakes being the aggressor early and taking a 2-1 advantage in the 47th minute. Jahmir Hyka squeaked one by Gonzalez after a beautiful ball in from Aníbal Godoy. A save Gonzalez makes 9 out of 10 times, just not tonight. San Jose wouldn’t look back and Tarbell sent back a Michael Barrios rebound in the 53rd minute and Maxi hit the woodwork in the 64th minute. Cristian Colmán shanked a header wide in the 79th minute that would have tied it. The Earthquakes iced it in the 88th minute with another Vako goal. The final score was 3-1 San Jose, certainly not the result the home crowd expected but Dallas remains at the top of the Western Conference with 42 points. Oscar Pareja will have to wait until at least August 12th to capture his 100th win as FC Dallas travels to Century Link Field to play Seattle. Pareja defended the effort of his players after the match and stressed how important it was to stay balanced and not get too high or too low despite the disappointing result.
