Frisco, Texas — The Frisco RoughRiders welcomed back former Rider Elvis Andrus on a rehab assignment as they hosted the Midland Rockhounds. The Riders were coming off a 4-2 victory over Midland Sunday night on strong pitching performances by starter Tyler Wagner and relievers Jeffrey Springs and Reed Garrett. Wagner was making his debut for AA Frisco and earned the win. Tonight, it was newly promoted Jonathan Hernandez’s turn as he got the call for Frisco. Hernandez excelled in Advanced-A Down East and leads the Rangers organization with 77 strikeouts this season. He’s ranked the number 13 prospect in Rangers system by MLB Pipeline. The young man has some cred. Hernandez labored through 4 innings, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits, walking 4 and striking out only 1 while getting hurt by two Rockhounds homeruns. He fell behind the hitters early and Midland’s Seth Brown hit a 3 run blast to left CF that made it 4-0 Midland right out of the gate. Hernandez settled down a bit and was able to get some ground balls to get out of some jams but gave another big fly to Sean Murphy and the Riders offense wasn’t able to dig out of the early hole. Midland added another run in the 8th on their way to 7-1 win. Michael O’Neill drove in the lone run in the 5th, which was unearned, Andrus went 0-3 and Frisco left 7 runners stranded. The bullpen continued to do their part as Brett Martin and Adam Parks combined to pitch 5 innings, striking out 6 and giving up just one run. The Riders fall to 21-42 and Midland improves to just one game under .500 at 31-32. Tomorrow it’s an afternoon affair from Dr. Pepper Ballpark, a 12:05 start in the finale with the Rockhounds before welcoming the San Antonio Missions. Pedro Payano (2-5, 5.73 ERA) will get the start for the RoughRiders.
